Nouveau Noir

It's the first time I'm going to talk about fashion and brand identity. And ironically I'll be doing it with someone who's extremely young and completely new. Her name is Athena Manolopoulos. And her brain child is Nouveau Noir. I love this name.

There's a couple of things I like about what's going on here. First of all Athena designed the scarves, set the photography, took the photography, graphic designed everything, and invented the brand name. I love people who can cross traditional design boundaries like this within a single creative vision. I think it's apparent below in the cohesiveness of the product and imagery. It feels like a visual world you can inhabit and get into. This is the test of a brand I think. Words immediately come to mind. It's tonal, bohemian, sexy, provocative, and calm. The photographs have some kind of very sensitive voyeuristic quality which is amazing, and very contemporary I think. I love her combinatoric use of black and white photography, images from the everyday, iridescence, and stop motion stills. The whole ensemble feels very cinematic and filmic.

As for the scarves themselves, there are several I really love. She seems to have made the scarf a sexy object by way of the branding. But just to point out one in particular, I love the extremely thin one in the third image from the bottom. It's so thin that it blurs an interesting line between being a garment and being jewelry. Maybe this will have to be a discussion for the a future post. For now, let's just enjoy the scarves and the beautiful visual world below. Thanks Athena!

Mirrors

So there are apparently alot of Meagan lovers out there. The post below this one.

Today we move as promised from beauty to vanity. How perfect and ironic. There's a million ways you could go when considering mirrors, but let's try to keep it relatively simple for the moment. Personally I love oversized mirrors. Or at least big. Size does matter after all. Stylistically, you have a decision to make. Either ornate, antique, and distressed. Or clean, elegant, and modern. So I included some examples of both because I think they are equal in application. Mirrors are one of those elements that can completely define a space on their own. This is obvious in the first couple of images. But the second to last image is less so. In this image, the mirror is somewhat smaller and offset or not immediately in focus. Yet it's still highly integral. I can't imagine either space without the mirror exactly where it is. Sometimes you need it for medium sized areas of blank wall to cover, and add another visual layer. While it's simultaneously adding yet another abstract element to spatial composition of the room in general. And the very last image is the total flip where the wall is a mirror in itself. Yet another great idea.

Fashion Photography: Meagan Cignoli

I promise to get back to over sized mirrors in the very next post. The teaser is the post below this one. But I wanted to take a break from interiors for just a moment and look at some beautiful fashion photography by New York based fashion photographer Meagan Cignoli. I must have met Meagan about a year or so ago. And upon entering her downtown loft for the very first time I immediately knew I had met someone with an incredibly sensitive eye. The photographs below only represent a fraction of that. Each of her photographs to me look like an unique universe within themselves. Each individuated in their own way. Yet all commonly bound with a level of introspection and a subtle play between subject and setting that I always enjoy looking for in her work. I additionally love how there is often not anything overly complex in the images. Yet they hold your eye and mind. They seem to maintain a certain level of photographic abstraction which I find very beautiful, and very contemporary. A street corner, a bench, a trellis, a blank area of color, clocks, and a plane of water are all heightened to become environments within themselves.
